Lips and chrysanthemums on the forearm, neo-traditional

Neo-traditional tattoo

Strong outlines, deep colour and more detail than the classics. A style that gives every motif a character of its own.

Neo-traditional grew out of traditional tattooing but allows more: shading, a wider palette, soft transitions and ornamental detail. The outline still holds everything together, so the piece stays readable for years.

What neo-traditional is

A neo-traditional tattoo keeps the foundation of the classics: a clear black line and closed fields of colour. To that it adds what the old designs did not have: depth, shading, a broader palette and decorative elements in the spirit of Art Nouveau.

That lets a motif be more realistic and more ornamental at the same time. A face has expression, fur has texture, flowers have light. And it all remains a tattoo, not a picture transferred to the skin.

In this style I mostly tattoo portraits of women, animals, birds, flowers and objects with a story: lighthouses, vases, statues.

Colour and outline

The outline in neo-traditional varies in weight: heavier around the motif, finer in the details. That gives the piece dimension and lets it look good both up close and from across the street.

I pick colours so they do not fight each other: usually two or three main shades and a few accents. Saturated pigments and solid fills mean the piece fades slowly and is easy to refresh.

Where on the body

Neo-traditional likes clear fields: the upper arm, forearm, thigh, calf, sternum. A single motif fits into one session; several motifs can be joined into a sleeve or a larger composition on the leg.

I draw the design for the exact spot, so the outline follows the shape of the muscle and the motif does not break at the joints.

FAQ

01How much does a tattoo cost?

The price depends on the size, the placement, the amount of detail and the number of sessions. Tell me what you want, give the size and placement and attach references, and I will prepare a quote for your project.

02What is the first step?

Message me on WhatsApp or Instagram: your idea, placement, approximate size and references. I will tell you whether it can be done, suggest a format and a rough price, and then we book a consultation or go straight to a session date.

03How far in advance should I book?

I usually book a few weeks ahead. For large projects we plan the following sessions straight away.

04How do I prepare for a session?

Get a good night’s sleep. Eat a proper meal before the session and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and medication that affects blood clotting, provided stopping it is safe and agreed with your doctor. Wear comfortable clothes that give easy access to the area.

05Which styles do you tattoo?

Three: Japanese, neo-traditional and traditional. What they share is a bold outline and full colour, which is what makes a tattoo age well. Japanese is my main specialisation; neo-traditional and traditional I have tattooed alongside it for years.
